Ok Guy's Lets talk about some of the issue's, failures or malfunctions we are having while shooting our pistols and what are the best fixes.
I Have Issues / Failures... Pistol
So, Anybody have the Gen 5 Glock 30 .45
Last time i was at the range with a friend of mine he kept getting slide bite on his firing hand thumb and kept hitting the mag release with his support hand palm while trying to get a good grip. But when shooting his Gen 5 G21 he has no problems. He does have some big paws trying to fit them on that little gun.
Slide bite is index issues. Mag release is hand placement issues. Generally when the nonfiring hand is skidding off the gun from the firing hand thumb pushing the non firing hand down and foreword. But... have him take a video and let’s look at it.
Hey Shrek, I told him that and tried to explain how index could be affecting this. I even used a yard stick to show him center of shoulder down to his sights how it would change. I will let him know what your suggesting.
By the way he's one of those big football player guys 6'5 @ 265lbs.. He Picks things up and puts them down. Lol
I commonly ran into 2 tyoes of malfunctions:
1) Slide is out of battery-opened, due to FTE/FTF/double.
My immediate action is drop the mag, then rack the slide. Usually dropping the mag is enough to fix the issue.
2). Slide in battery-closed. Pulled the trigger and heard a click. I'd TRB as Shrek instructed.
This usually caused by slide failure to lock back on empty mag, OR a catastrophic failure of case splitting/bulging.
My main take away, if slide is open malfunction (same with AR), I'll immediately drop the mag.
Slide failure to lock backwards s a firing thumb issue. Btw
I had this happen several times with my G19 as well ( counting my rounds fired ) No slide lock. I thought it was because I ran it dry. I don't clean my guns much but i do Lube when heading out to the range.
I will pay attention to my firing thumb placement.
I also had this happen to my Colt A2 Hbar shooting 62g 5.56 last time out. It happened once out of 75- 100 rounds shot.
I too am having issues with my slide failing to lock backwards. I have been trying to retrain my grip, I am guessing that my firing thumb needs to be down more? I think that the way to do this would be to lock my firing wrist down more? Am I on the right track?
Completely the opposite the firing thumb need to be UP.
Hi Ryan; I found that I was pushing my firing hand thumb down as I fired. John showed me this in a video and then I started running the firing hand thumb high and neutral and the failure to slide lock went away. I am a bit hard-headed though and subsequently went back to having my firing hand thumb down on my non-firing hand and "bingo" the non-slide lock issue popped back up. I asked John for help and ended up through his coaching actually taping a tack to my firing hand palm just below my thumb. A bit old school, but it worked. After a bit of blood and discomfort, i finally broke the habit. There could be other issues at work, but for me it was definitely grip related and once i had a solid grip and kept my firing hand thumb high and neutral all the non-slide lock issues went away. best of luck
